Yep, that time is right! It's a little after 5 a.m., I'm awake and drinking my first cup of coffee and easing into my day. What a day today promises to be!
I did manage to sleep soundly for the majority of the night. At least until around 4 a.m. when I began waking on and off due to all the ideas I have in my head, LOL! It is so funny how caught up in my artwork I get. I actually dream about it. Sometimes a creative solution will come to me; while at other times, a problem may only serve to plague me for a bit until I finally figure it all out. But I dream about my artwork, the creative process, and my art as a business.
Last night I thought more and more about putting my artwork, brochures, class description list, and business cards into Rita's store. I tried to consider all the options and the most success way for us to accomplish this. I also decided that this must be handled in the most professional of manners meaning I desire to have it in writing whatever arrangement we work out. Right down to the smallest of details.... details that could be important later on in the event that something doesn't work out for either one of us.
First and foremost, I desire clarity that all the artwork displayed in the store belongs to me, the artist. I'll need to clearly define what are class examples and which items are for sale. Of course that shouldn't be too difficult as I can create some labels labeling my class samples with the title of the classes and the for sale items will have a firm price tag! I desire to have the length of time my artwork is to be on display/sale within the store with the realization that in the event that this works out to be a win-win situation that it is subject to renewal in the event that this is accomplished sucessfully for both parties involved. This will allow both of an out, in the event that something doesn't work out between us. I want it in writing the times that I am allowed to be in the store, setting up and maintaining my area; afterall this is her place of business. I simply have no desire to be in her way while she is conducting business there. Rita appears to be pretty laid back but I want to really think this all through before I get into a situation that isn't right for either of us. I believe all the specific details decided by the two of us after we've reach an agreement be documented and signed by each of us right down to the smallest detail of how much space I'll have for this venture, the cost of it, and when and how she is to be paid. I desire to allow no room for error. Definately something I need to research a little further but for now, I am making notes.
It isn't the same to me as putting my artwork in my fiances store. There is no doubt about who the artwork belongs to, what is for sale or what isn't, when I can get in there and maintain the area, the prices I established, and so forth. I basically can do whatever I desire within there. But I think when I am dealing with someone I don't only know too well but I am putting what rightfully belongs to me within her store I need to protect me and my artwork to the best of my ability.
If any of my blog readers have any consignment hints, tips, suggestions, etc. I'd love to hear them. I just desire to be certain that I cover all the basis here and do what is in both Rita's and of course my own best interest to make this a satisfying relationship for both of us. Anyways, feel free to shoot me off an email. I can be reached at nchantin @ yahoo.com
