As an artist, one the quickest ways to establish a professional relationship with those who I need to advance my career and one of the most imporant lessons that I've ever learned is simply put this way. Be professional! All the way. Let's assume that I sent an initial cover letter and I've received a reply seeking to view more of my artwork. What do I do now?
HOPEFULLY, I invested money in the creation of my artwork, took great strides to have it professionally photographed, slides to made, packaged professionally, but what did I do to promote me professionally? The answer is simple... I used the most quality supplies and materials that I could afford. I took great care to include a postcard or a brochure, along with a copy of my business cards, my resume, my artist statement and an additional cover letter along with the samples of my best work. Wouldn't want to waste such an important opportunity now that the ball is back in my court now would I? And neither should you!
Begin to now think about these things before you send out letters of inquiry vs. after the fact. If you are rushed to throw a package together at the last minute, does that convey the response you were hoping and expecting to receive? Could you unprofessional behavior cost you in the long scheme of things. Unfortunately, it can and even more importantly, you may only get a one time shot...... so be prepared for success! and avoid setting yourself up for the pitfall of yet another self-defeating behavior.
