Restless spirit...

I swear that Don cannot sit still one his day off. Yesterday, he wandered around the house aimlessly after finishing up mowing our lawn. I knew instantly that it wouldn't be too much longer before he would start with the "What do you want to do?" "Anywhere you'd like to go?" and I was right!Shortly after 1 p.m., we set out, trying to figure out where to go.

I suggested we go to Maumee, Ohio and the Perrysburg area to take him to go see Fort Meigs. Don had never even heard of the place nor the fort, so I played "tour guide" along the way. I should also mention that it has been almost twenty-five years since I had last been in the area. As a child, my dad used to take me fishing there. My dad is a die-hard Lake Erie fisherman, fishing specifically for walleye and perch and the Portage River is a spawning place for walley sometime in the spring. I remember the trip to Maumee very well as I fell in the river! Shhhh, please don't tell my dad! A couple of us ventured off along the river bank and yours truly found one heck of a slippery slope and down I went. I remember to this day how cold the water was and that my teeth started chattering immediately. Luckily, for me, the current wasn't too strong where I fell in and I landed about two feet out from the river bank. I assure you that it didn't take me too long to make my way back to the bank, especially when I saw some rapids up or down stream! We wondered around Fort Meigs for hours so that I could dry off before returning to where Dad was fishing, LOL!

Well, yesterday, I manage to at least stay dry! We drove into a small park where Corn Cob Hill is in Perrysburg, took a stroll there and looked at a beautiful statue of Commander Perry, and some magnificant views of the Portage River. We followed St. Rt. 20 West along a scenic byway and made our way to Fort Meigs. When we arrived, they were closing in 15 minutes, so we were allowed to enter the Fort without the $7 per adult charge and manage to see just about everything. I did have my digital camera with me so I took some magnificant photographs, which I'll have to upload later.

From Fort Meigs we continued on the scenic byway until we spotted a sign for Fallen Timbers and continued to follow it to a small monumental park where another monument is. I couldn't get over the detail that went into it and loved how it was combined with an Indian, England soldier, and an early American frontiersman.

Next, we made our way back into Maumee, where we ended up at the Toledo Zoo. The zoo had already closed for the day but we managed to get some information, directions to a restaurant, and made our way to Ruby Tuesday's to eat dinner. Afterwards, we headed back into Maumee and made our way home. I must admit that Don is getting better with directions and managed to keep us on the road leading home. I'll save more info for when I get the photographs on the computer, resized, and finally uploaded.
